Jesse Owens in Berlin (05.04)
Jesse Owens visits again in Berlin in 1964 and recounts his experiences during the Olympic Games in 1936. In Germany, the Nazis portrayed African Americans as inferior and ridiculed the United States, based on "black auxiliaries." One German official even complained that the Americans have "non-humans, like Owens and other Negro athletes to compete. But the German people felt otherwise. The crowd cheered him in Berlin of 110,000 glittering Olympic Stadium and his autograph or picture wassought, as he ran through the streets. On August 3, won the 5-foot-10, 165-pound Owens his first finals, with the 100 meters in 10.3, Rand, Ralph Metcalfe, also an African-American. The next day, Owens was started almost from the long jump shortly after qualifying. He fouled on his first two jumps, though he was stunned when officials counted a practice run on the track and into the pit as an attempt. With a jump remaining, Luz Long, tall, blue eyes, blond German long jumper who was hismore difficult competition, introduced himself. He proposed that a brand of Owens to skip the first few inches of the edge off, and play there for sure. Owens took the advice and qualified. In the final vote in the afternoon, long jump fifth Owens '25-10. But Owens leaped 26-3 ¾ on his next attempt and won the gold medal with a final jump 26-5 ½.
